A Biography
I, Luo Xu, born of a small merchant family in 1956 in Mi Le County, carried my own grass stool and proper textbook through primary school, spent middle school learning agriculture to find that crops grow from the earth; at 16 was taken care of by being sent to work at the porcelain factory, the only joy of that time was in creating a few small roosters; assigned to work at the construction team - there were dreams of becoming an architect, but a lack of mathematical skills was discovered and it was given up along the way; at 23 had a dream to become an artist and began studying the counter-revolutionary, wrong and rightist painting, tested three times for the art institute, but unfortunately was not admitted, in the heat of the moment took leave from the construction team, raised long haired rabbits for a living, but the rabbits all died and the hair flew the coop; got mixed up with the county culture house serving as an art designer; in 85 taken in as the bastard son of China Central Academy of Fine Arts sculpture dean Mr Qian Zhaowu, doing body studies for a year; in 92 got tired of starvation and desire, quit the culture house, created some boring works for a little cash, got a big head and flitted from Mi Le to Kunming with lofty aspirations; in 94 joined some hot-blooded blokes to create the Dada Art Company Ltd, pushed up to the throne of chairman at the end of the year, strutted around like the top dog feeling talented and powerful; pushed down from the throne at the dawn of 95, serving 3 more months; hit with a new surge of aspiration in 96, with just a three meter bamboo pole and some credit at the bank, constructed the Earth Nest; in August 97 appointed myself the boss and master chef of the Earth Nest, leading the troops in the kitchen and molding ancient dance into the doomed business model: "What do we eat? Culture. What do we watch? Art." After three years of strenuous work, my body had wasted down to the bones; the doors were shut and the fires extinguished on May 1st, 2000, continued raising dogs and kept the donkey - all the workers ran for their lives. Since March 2000, I ve been gardening, lounging on the porch and sitting around, raising chickens and ducks, planting gourds and beans. There have been a few group exhibitions, solo exhibitions, and a few flowers from some lovely ladies. Through many ups and downs, I never caved in. Looking back across several decades of wanderings, most of the time was spent playing with clay, thought about changing paths many times, but the wood has already been carved into a boat, as it is hard to steer, there is nothing left but to go with the flow.
